March, 2021

Dear Church Family at Wyebrook,

Isaiah 1:18 reminds us, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” The snow reminds me of the cleansing of sin by the blood of Christ. Sometimes I wonder if the snow is a reminder to us of the need we have as believers to have our sins cleansed away. Nonetheless we each have that need daily. May we humble our hearts before the Lord because of each of our personal needs of confession and cleansing before our Lord.

May we as his people not only rejoice in his forgiveness but may we share with others God’s goodness to us through the gospel (good news) of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection for us.

From what I have read, for some the ash cross of Ash Wednesday represents repentance and the gospel message and to others it is a reminder that we were created by dust and to dust we shall return. The ashes are from last year’s palm leaves that were burned. Ash Wednesday is the starting day of Lent season. The Lent season is a forty-day period before Easter in preparation before the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. It seemed to have its beginning when Jesus was in the wilderness forty days before his public ministry and lent, though not celebrated by Baptist is a time when people “give up” certain things for this forty-day period to show their sincerity to God.

May we recognize the need for drawing near to the Lord by prayer and scripture reading and genuine thankfulness to God for his great mercy and grace daily to us.
